[HandBrake Guide] Rip Protected DVD with HandBrake 1.0.0/1.0.7

HandBrake, the famous open-source multi-platform video transcoder finally released its version 1.0.0 (1.0.7). With the new version, users can now use Handbrake to rip DVD movies to more presets, devices and file types. How to Rip DVD with HandBrake (Protected DVDs Included)

Before we start HandBrake DVD ripping, you should note that the latest HandBrake v1.0.7 still contains no support for protected DVDs. So if you plan to use HandBrake 1.0.0/1.0.7 to rip DVD with protections, remember to download VLC or libdvdcss for HandBrake.

Step 1: Download and Install HandBrake

Free download HandBrake (The latest version is 1.0.7) on computer. It works on Mac OS X 10.7 to 10.13, Windows Vista to 10 as well as other platforms. Step 3: Select the Right DVD Title

HandBrake will automatically choose what it thinks is the main title. For unprotected DVDs, the selected title will normally be the right one. But if you want to let Handbrake rip protected DVDs, you can:

• Install VLC (latest) or libdvdcss on computer;
• Choose the title manually: normally the title with the longest duration; or identify the right title with a DVD player;
• Rip the DVD to ISO file with other freeware like MakeMKV;

Step 4: Set the Output Format for HandBrake 1.0.0 DVD Ripping

Choose one profile from HandBrake formats list. The latest HandBrake version (1.0.7) has added wide range of new profiles, including presets for Gmail, Apple, Android, Roku, Chromecast, Windows, MKV VP9 video for YouTube upload and Intel QuickSync Video H.265/HEVC encoder.

Step 5: Set the Output Video Settings

Now you can adjust the video and audio settings for ripping DVDs with HandBrake 1.0.0 to further customize the output file. There is an online Handbrake documentation on each option which is less technical for even layman. Below we give you the necessary (recommended) settings with this free DVD ripper.

* Video settings:
• If you are ripping TV shows DVD with HandBrake, you may find the screen is displayed with lines. In this case, click "Filter" and check Deinterlace. However, if you can to get better quality, try the Decomb option.
• Under the "Video" section, you can adjust the Constant Quality to control the output file (smaller RF number results in better quality). Video quality can significantly influence the file size. You're suggested to keep the default settings.

* Audio settings:
• To get the best sound quality, select the Dolby Digital or DTS sound track from the drop down window, and choose "Auto Passthru".
• There may be foreign language tracks you don't need. Removing those unnecessary audio tracks and reduce the final file size.

* Subtitles settings:
• Choose which subtitles you'd want to include in the ripped DVD. You can either choose hard burn (you can 't turn them on or off) or soft subtitles (in separate text track).
• If there is no subtitles in your language, click import SRT to add subtitles manually. You can also remove the unwanted subtitles.
• If you have problem to using Handbrake 1.0.0 to rip DVDs, always remember to check if the subtitles are in formats supported by HandBrake.

Step 6: Start to Rip DVD with HandBrake

After you set the output destination folder, now you can click "Start Encode" to rip movie with Handbrake v1.0.0/1.0.7 now. Click "Add to Queue" if you are ripping more than one title. The processing time of the whole HandBrake DVD ripping mainly based on your computer's configuration. According to my experience, as well as feedbacks from other users, there are some Handbrake errors during the ripping.
* Can't download and install HandBrake due to Microsoft. NET Framework 4.6 incompatibility.
* HandBrake crashes when ripping DVD to MKV VP9.
* The VP9 encoding is painfully slow.
* Quicksync test encode with h265 results in a freeze.
* Encoder stops with an error at beginning.

1. Note that HandBrake only requires .NET 4.6 not 4.6.2, or try to download SP 1 pitch.
2. Try a clean removal / re-install the previous HandBrake version.
3. Try turning off qsv deocde in preferences if the speed is unexpectedly slow.
4. Turn to a HandBrake alterative free DVD ripper to get rid of any ripping problems with Handbrake.

Verdict: As a freeware, HandBrake is an excellent product, and the new version undoubtedly brings many new features that further strengthens its leadership in the best free DVD rippers across platform. However, it's not perfect. Even with HandBrake which has improved the program significantly, there are still bugs and errors. Most importantly, it still contains no support for protected DVDs. If you want to have a more stable DVD ripping process, you can also try the HandBrake alternative rippping software.
