With the release of iPhone X 2017, it looks like iPad Pro design takes inspiration of iPhone X design. So you see a new iPad Pro (iPad Pro X, iPad X) with OLED display, FaceID recognition, yet no home button. Now let's check the specific changes in terms of design.

iPad pro no home button

No Home Button

According to the leaked information from iOS 12 Beta, the next generation iPad Pro removes the home button on the screen like iPhones (home button is gone since iPhone 8), so that the bezels would be slimmed down. Meanwhile, Apple also adopts the round corner design on the iPad Pro screen. As for the headphone jack, it is retained.

FaceID on iPad Pro 2018

Face ID

Another stirring news is that the new iPad Pro 2018 (or iPad X) comes with Face ID, being the first iPad with FaceID technology. Similarly, this upgrade is also originated from iOS 12, as developers have discovered the presence of AvatarKit for iPad. AvatarKit for iPad is the frame work for Apple's Animoji characters. Thus, we have reasons to believe iPad users would be able to unlock their tablet with their face.

Bigger Screen

The iPad Pro 2017 is available in two screen sizes, namely a 12.9-inch and a 10.5 inch version. iPad Pro 2017 vs 2018, there are both similarities and differences on screen size. For one thing, the 10.5 inch iPad goes from 250.6 x 174.1 x 6.1mm to 247.5 x 178.7 x 6mm, but leading a enlarged screen up to 11 inch owing to the removal of home button. While the 12.9-inch device maintains the same screen size while shrinking in terms of dimensions from 305.7 x 220.6 x 6.9mm to 280 x 215 x 6.4mm. Beyond that, comparing with the LCD display of iPad Pro 2017, the new iPad Pro comes with an OLED retina display, which reproduces colors more accurately and makes content much crisper.

iPad Pro Processor

Processor

Usually, iPad Pro models equip a modified version of the processor in the preceding iPhone. For example, the iPhone 7 came out with an A10 Fusion chips last time in 2017, and the iPad Pro got an A10X Fusion. Thus, this time the 2018 iPad Pro adopts an A11 Bionic chip, which is a variant of A11 Bionic shipped on iPhone X and iPhone 8. Of course, the possibility for iPad Pro 2018 to ship an A12X cannot be ruled out.

iOS iPad Pro

iOS 12

In the iPad 2017 vs 2018 comparison, iOS 12 could be another enormous update. iOS 12 focuses more on improving performance and addressing issues that you're able to get 40% faster launching apps, 50% faster displaying keyboard and 70% faster taking photos. In iOS 12 vs iOS 11 comparison, iOS 12 also brings some new features to next-gen iPad Pro 2018, such as enhanced augmented reality, smarter Photos, faster Siri, grouped notification, screen time.

iPad Pro 2018 release date, price

Price & Release Date

The previous iPad Pro 10.5-inch starts at $649 for the 64GB in WiFi model and the 12.9-inch model begins at $799. Apple maintains the price for the new iPad Pro 2018, but it could even raise them if the tablet gains an iPhone X style design with Face ID.

Apple failed to show any new hardware at its WWDC event in June, thus Steptember-October timeframe comes the best opportunity for a debut. Actually, pre-orders for any devices announced at the event on Sept 12 begins on Sept 14, with an official release pegged for Sept 21. But Apple hasn't confirmed any details about a new iPad, so take these rumors with a pinch of salt for now.

By the way, there is a big possibility that Apple will not release a next generation iPad mini. Since iPhone is getting bigger and bigger, especially a 6.5 inch model with OLED display will be launched this year, Apple would like users to buy big screen iPhone or the 6th-genernation 9.7-inch iPad.

Verdict

Obviously, if you want to buy a higher-end iPad, the new iPad Pro 2018 is worth the wait. In the iPad Pro comparison, the new one absolutely boosts the performance with more impressive features, giving you a better experience on gaming, watching videos, shooting, chatting and so on. Finally, it still feels like an unfinished story until new iPad Pros emerge.
